The winners and losers of Google's May 2026 update reveal where AI search is heading. And there's two patterns.

The first, Google's favoring locals. All the local shops leapfrogged the giant overseas ones that had thin or localized content. So make sure your website says plainly what you do, where, and who for, so that Google can see when you're the right answer.

Google also made it super clear it rewards sites where users actually complete the task, not summarize pages based on someone else's work.
