The CEO of Google just said that Google Search is evolving into an agent manager. Let's talk about what he means by that and what this means for businesses that are doing SEO right now.
Sundar Bachai was just on the Cheeky Pint podcast, and he's saying that soon when you enter a search into Google, it's not just going to return an answer. It's actually gonna spin up agents that can do tasks on your behalf. For those of us that have been paying close attention to this, it's been pretty clear that it's headed in this direction for a while now.
It's been funny to me to watch SEO's debate over the last year whether or not Google is going to give up the 10 blue links in exchange for an AI search result. I've been saying for a while now that by the end of 2026 Google's search results page will look more like AI mode. It'll be primarily an AI response, but this actually goes one step beyond that.
What Sundar is saying isn't just that an AI will review the top results and then summarize it using a large language model, but instead, at least for some searches, multiple agents will go out and actually interact with these websites and take action on your behalf. Might help you book a flight or make a dinner reservation. They might let you check multiple stores to see if any of them have shoes in your size.
They might reach out and get quotes from three different companies and compare them for you.
It's really hard to predict exactly what shape this will take, but I think what's clear is that we're very quickly moving into a world where we're building the websites more for AI agents than we are for humans. Now, for the foreseeable future, we still need our websites to be usable by humans, but if we're not already there yet, very soon most users of our websites will be AI agents, agents gathering information from and interacting with our websites on behalf of a human.
And humans are ultimately gonna be making decisions based on the recommendations of those agents.
And so it's time to start thinking: how do you make sure your website shows up when agents are searching? How do you make sure that the information that they're looking for is on your website? And how do you make sure it's easy for them to interact with your website?
On that last point, I recommend looking into web m C P. I have a whole video on it, but it looks like this is gonna be the protocol we're using to let agents interact with our website. The other thing I recommend is just loading your website up with any kind of information that an agent might need when doing a search on behalf of a human.
I have another video detailing all the pages I recommend adding to your website and what content you should put on there.
In short, SEO is gonna be more important than ever. It's just we won't be optimizing for humans so much anymore. We'll be optimizing for AI agents.
