This graph changed the world of digital marketing this year. This is HubSpot's SEO traffic. For years, HubSpot was posting about things that were not in their niche.
They were getting away with it. At the peak, they were getting 24 million clicks a month from Google. Again, for things that were unrelated to HubSpot's core business.
But recently HubSpot has been punished for this. Google is now focusing a lot more on what's called topical authority. Very simple.
Are you posting things that you have authority for? Content marketing strategies, something that HubSpot has a lot of topical authority for. Inspirational quotes, not so much.
By the way, this was something that HubSpot was publishing. A lot of that they were hit for. CRM use cases and benefits.
Again, something that HubSpot has a lot of topical authority for. But if HubSpot was to publish something on quantum physics, not so much. Tons of other media properties saw graphs just like this.
There is a way to expand into topics that are unrelated to you though. Pick ones that are adjacent to your topic, not completely different. com.
