AI is quickly changing how companies hire. And so I just thought I'd share how it's changing how we hire at TJ Digital. Also we're hiring, most of the changes in my hiring has been to entry level and mid level positions.
The only thing I'm seeing change for senior level positions is that it's now important that you're keeping up with AI. But for entry level and mid level positions, it's changed a lot, at least for me. For tasks where we just needed someone to follow a simple checklist, we would typically hire V A's usually overseas.
And for every other position we would hire specialists. We would hire writers and back end engineers and front end designers, on page SEO specialists, off page SEO specialists. Then as AI started to get more capable, a lot of those tasks started to move over to AI.
It quickly didn't make sense to have dedicated writers and even a lot of tasks that would have gone to a developer or an SEO specialist could be turned into an SOP or a large language model can do most of the work and the human is just there for quality assurance. And so for the last two years, I really saw things continuing in this direction. I assume we'd have a few senior level people creating SOP's and then everyone else following those SOP's.
I mistakenly assumed that the more capable the AI models became, the less the specific skills of the person executing the s O P would matter. In reality, as these AI models have become more capable, the skill cap for AI use has gone up and as a result, instead of looking for people who can just follow an s O P I'm looking for people who can work without an s O P.
I'm building a team of AI native generalists, people who understand digital marketing, know how to work as a team and who can be given a goal and figure out how to accomplish that with modern AI tools. And I discovered this the hard way. Over the last six months I've created over 100 s O P s on how to do various digital marketing tasks with the help of AI.
But still, for most tasks, I find myself needing to make a whole new s O P and the more capable the AI models get, the less relevant my old s O p's are and the less generalizable the new s O p's become. And meanwhile, someone with an understanding of the industry, digital marketing in my case that really understands how to use these tools is becoming more and more powerful every month. And so those are the kind of people I want on my team.
Someone that can be given a goal and even if they have no idea how to complete the task, they're able to figure it out with the help Of AI, they know what all the various models and tools are capable of and just as importantly what they're not capable of. And when they need a human, they know how to structure their prompts and context in a way to get the desired output and how to troubleshoot when the AI models not giving them what they need.
I truly believe these kind of people are gonna become incredibly valuable to companies. And if you are this kind of person and you're looking for work, please let me know.
