OpenAI and Google are both trying to create the best AI shopping experience this holiday season. Let's talk about the different approaches they've each taken and which one I think is going to win in the end.
So OpenAI just rolled out shopping research inside of ChatGPT. You can enable this from the tools menu and then type in whatever prompt you want. Tell ChatGPT what kind of product you're looking for in any additional context, and then ChatGPT will generate a custom UI asking you specific questions about the product to help you narrow down the results.
It's actually a pretty cool experience, but the process takes quite a while and the output is very verbose. I think this would be a good experience if you were making a really important purchase.
Google AI modes much more streamlined. You again start by typing in a prompt, but then it much more quickly generates a custom U I. With information about the products and your options.
might think this would just come down to whether you want a more in depth long research process or something quick, I actually think Google is just gonna be a better experience overall, and that's because they just have the better algorithm.
As we know from monitoring ChatGPT's search algorithm, it's very basic. ChatGPT can't quite yet understand authority and quality in the same way Google does. It's essentially just doing semantic searches and then returning Whatever result is most prominent across the internet.
It's very easy to game right now, and as a result, as a user, the recommendations just feel random. Now, Google's algorithm is far from perfect, but you're generally much more likely to see trusted brands, and it's much harder to trick their algorithm into recommending you.
