As I've said a couple times before, I think digital marketing agencies as we know them today will be obsolete by 2027. But what will replace them? What were these new agencies or consultants look like?

It's really hard to say, but I think I have a pretty good idea of what they could look like just based on what we're starting to see work really well now.

My bet is that digital marketing agencies and consultants of the future will be focused on building and maintaining your digital twin. I'll do other things too, of course, but I think this will be at the core. And that might sound oddly specific, but hear me out.

As a business owner, you're the expert on your business and your brand. You can talk about it the way no one else can. Ideally, you'd be heavily involved in every aspect of your marketing.

And this is always been a big challenge for us digital marketers, is representing the vision of the business owner without taking up all of their time.

So what is a digital twin? It's a large language model that's connected to all the information there is to know about this business, this brand, and the business owner themselves. It's all the facts about the business, all the opinions that the business owner holds, writing samples, website structure, and then all the instructions and scaffolding necessary for the large language model to know how to use the context for a particular task.

Doing this well is really hard. It's a skill that's now being called context engineering. But when it's done well, you can scale the output of the business owner and marketing team by 10x and maybe 100x in the future.

Suddenly you can create social media posts, blog posts, press releases, respond to press inquiries, drafts, website copy and outreach emails. So I think companies and individuals that can do this well are gonna become very valuable. Maybe marketing agencies and consultants will be hiring context engineers to do this for them.

Who knows?

But extrapolating out into the future as these large language models evolve into agents with tools and browser use, creating a reliable digital twin just feels like an incredibly valuable project.

So obviously none of us know what digital marketing is gonna look like in 2027, but I bet that'll be part of it.
